My Gratitude Journal Story
I started journaling in 2012, and it literally changed my life. I was in a job that wasn’t fulfilling to my spirit or soul, I was less than thrilled with living in Wisconsin, and I knew that something in my life had to change.
I felt like I was living in the movie Groundhog’s day. Every damn day was the same. Every year it was more of the same. I was about to implode. Then I realized, if I wanted things to change, I had to change my perspective.
I wasn’t being grateful for the things I had in my life. I started to give thanks to my job. I was sincerely grateful for all the company had given me. They were, after all, the best company I had ever worked for. My boss was the best boss I had ever had – and when I began to look at my work life like this, things began to shift.
I wanted to move somewhere warm and sunny. I was frozen for eight years in Wisconsin. As a native Californian, you can only imagine the culture shock moving to a small town in South Eastern Wisconsin.
I started journaling what I wanted my new life to look like in California; I started telling strangers that we were moving. Slowly but surely, 2 years later my husband accepted a job offer in San Diego. We were MOVING!!!
Now, 4 years later, I’m living my life in sunny Southern California!
Miracles of Keeping an Active Gratitude Journal
What do I mean by an active gratitude journal? It means that you pay attention to your journal like it was your best friend. It will give you gifts that you couldn’t even begin to imagine. Don’t ignore a gift with such super powers!
When I first started writing, I truly believed that my life was going to change. But, my faith was tested when nothing was happening. I did question if it was working, but when I let go of MY timing and surrendered to MY PLANS, that when things started to transform. Repeating what I wanted for my life over and over again out loud, it eventually happened.
Many people have shared with me they just can’t keep up with writing in their journal every day, that’s “it’s too time consuming”. I totally get it. There are times that I put a pause on my writing too. I have adopted new habits and have tried other ideas to see how they work, but nothing worked as well as gratitude journaling.
The point is to not put pressure on yourself, just go with the flow. When you want things to change in your life bad enough, that’s when the journal will find its way back into your life.
The Meaning of Gratitude
Gratitude takes many different shapes and forms. By definition, it means to be thankful and / or to give thanks. As for me, it means to start living your life as if every day was a miracle. I can tell you from experience, that when you live from this space, life is as gorgeous as ten thousand diamonds sparkling in a small room.
Now, I’m not just throwing fluff up your butt. It really does work. But it takes work in order for the miracles to begin to show up in your life. Like everything you want in life, it will take work and dedication.
How Your Kids Will Benefit from Gratitude Journaling
I always believe to lead by example. There were points in my life where I was teaching my kids through my actions to live in a place of negativity. My husband used to call me “negative Nikki”. That is so far from who I am today.
My son is a testament of my previous negative state. When I would ask him how his day went, he would reply with, “terrible”, even though it wasn’t. I began to teach him how powerful his words are and to mind his mouth.
I started to show him how to be grateful for what he had, to see the good in people that are in his life, and the good things that surrounded him every day.
Children are a work in progress. My kids are 11 and 7 now, these are the pivotal years that are shaping them into who they will become as adults. Every action, every word I speak they are watching my husband and I. The months and years go by fast, and soon they will be adults living their own lives, working out their problems. The years to teach them are now, and to lead by example is the most effective way. What I want my children to know is that they are light, and they can change their circumstances at any given moment.
My daughter started using The Five-Minute Journal, she began to see how good her life really was and is. She loves writing and talking about the good in life. She also has a passion for helping others. This journal allowed her to cultivate those thoughts on paper and put them into action.
Upgrade Your Life with Gratitude Journaling
On the show, my guest Beth Bunchman discussed in depth the benefits of gratitude journaling. On the show, you will learn:
1) How having an attitude of gratitude can change your perspective on life
2) Gratitude exercises that will pump up your life
3) How a gratitude journal can be the difference of having an unhappy life to having an extraordinary life
I believe when you know how to use the journal correctly, that’s when big shifts start to happen. Here are my steps you can implement today to have that journal start working for you!
Have the end in mind – write your story of what you want your life to look like. Write as if it already happened. For example, when I was yearning to move, I wrote my story over and over and over again of how it happened, where I was going to live, what our community and friends looked like, and sure enough it happened almost exactly how I wrote it. The only difference was, we didn’t move to the exact town I wrote down, we moved to the town over.
Start each entry with what you’re grateful for now. Give thanks to your health, your hair, your fingers, your children’s health etc. etc. That projects positive energy to the present and what is.
Write your story every day, make it up. Write in fantasy, because one day, it will come true. You just have to get your mind to catch up to believe what you’re writing.
Tell strangers lies. This really works. It’s really not a lie once it comes to fruition, and it will, you just have to start believing. For example, I wanted to live by the ocean again. So, when I told people I was moving, I told them I was moving back to California by the beach. At that present moment, I had no idea where we were moving or had no plans of moving near a beach. Sure enough, it happened a few years later.
